Family Reunion 8campout festival
Every year since 1999 we have brought together the underground Chicago community for an annual outdoor festival. The OrphanageSunday Nights

643 W. 31st St.
Bridgeport, Chicago

The Orphanage has been described as a community "where art is allowed to hang freely on the walls," and each week the center has an open mic and with a variety of different genres of music along with a potluck that allows the crowd to mingle and make new friends. One of the best-kept secrets in Chicago.





I Love House @ The Noteevery Wednesday night
Throughout the entire year of 2006 house music found a home at the Note. Every Wednesday on Milwaukee Avenue, BrilliantlyMad, Doin It Doin It Productions and Alley Soul hosted the best house night in Chicago. With residents like Gene Hunt and Jamie 3:26 it's easy to see how over 300 people regularly dance till 4am, with many people still waking up for work early Thursday morning. Every Wednesday brought out different crowds to the dancefloor and set it on fire. Some of the past guests included Paul Johnson, Mark Grant, Steve Silk Hurley, Glenn Underground and Lady D.





Get Freaky on Fridayevery Friday night
Bringing it back to 1999 with our Get Freaky on Friday series was a treat during 2006. We teamed up with lots of local Chicago crews to bring a variety of events together every Friday night. Several shows stick out and a few repeat every week. Some intimate and others stationed at clubs around the city, there was plenty of choices to pick from.

Our Warehouse Series was the most exciting and held at a huge 21,000 sq ft underground location hosted by Chicago Royalty. Some DJs including Traxx, Trancid, Local Hero, Oddball and Live Wire along with others threw down amazing sets. Another hot spot was The Lab where the No Affiliation and Pranksta crews dropped some great events to get freaky at.

Ladies in the House brought an all female lineup to DeKalb. Jen Z, Miss J and Karizma all headlined from Missouri while Carla Starla, Disko Kitty and Robbi drove from Chicago alongside local DeKalb band, Candy Sweat. The House Café hosted the first half of the night with the after-hours going late at a local residence.

Another special GFOF event was Eight:18 taking place at Unity Church, which was a wonderful spiritual dance party that happened on the first Friday of every month. Going from 7pm till midnight, this event combined over several areas to explore and had a variety of activities such as dancing, drum circles, mediations, massage, chill area and a wide selection of booths.




Entheon VillageBurningMan Community
Entheon, meaning “a place to discover the spirit within,” is an effort to promote sustainable cultural re-evolution that heals relationships between the people of the earth and our planet. The mission of Entheon is to demonstrate a future in which sustainability, ecological responsibility, environmental stewardship, and meditative and mystical consciousness are a welcomed and integrated part of society, and where art, spirituality and creativity is central to that vision. Entheon will be a grounded gathering place offering an intellectual, therapeutic, artistic and creative cornucopia of interactive opportunities. Lectures, workshops, renewable energy demonstrations, visionary art, zen meditation in a zendo, holotropic breathwork sessions, and performance come together in the spirit of celebration to co-create our shared vision of global healing and a broader awareness of ecological responsibility and the utopian spirit.

El Fuego del SolDominican Republic
We had a great opportunity to explore this new venture in the Dominican Republic. We assisted in documenting the beginnings of El Fuego del Sol and experienced how the locals in the area live. Kevin Adair started this alternative energy eco village that is changing the way people can interact with the D.R. and Haiti by providing jobs and making sun ovens.






DEMFMemorial Day Weekend
For the past few years we have covered the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and captured the dancing and thrills of the participants. DEMF is an electronic music showcase held in Detroit each Memorial Day weekend since 2000. Always a great time in the open air amidst all the stages throughout the weekend.






Wonderland's Final YearSource Productions
Source productions throws it’s final Wonderland event (or so we thought until they brought it back in 2009). It’s time to let the past slip away so we can move onto better events for our community.

Drum & Bass Liberation Front1 through 3
Who can forget these wild parties over the past year if you went? We set up dungeons at the first two and had a great time challenging peoples perception. The Drum & Bass soldiers took over and represented this style that has kept the underground interested year after year.

A BrilliantlyMad Lifestyle

The revolution of your self has begun. You must first just be and re-learn yourself so you can more fully understand yourself. Listen to your inner child and follow the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Allow those who came before to teach you about this planet and all it’s treats. Join the forces of your mind and heart together. Stay constantly alert, intensely aware of your own thoughts and feelings through spontaneous perception of self-discovery and insight.

There are two poles in everyone’s minds and bringing them together makes perfect harmony. The studies of Nietzsche brought the Apollonian and Dionysian selves to the intellect. Being on the side of Apollonian / Brilliance produces systematic and conditioning thought patterns which could very well put people in a state of numbness with the world. This side of the spectrum gives full attention to the details, marking their truths to be absolute despite counter arguments. On the other hand the Dionysian / Madness side produces ills of delusion through feelings from the mind, body or soul. Anxiety may rise and feelings can take over mere thoughts of the world. Both poles are dangerous places to dwell for long periods of time without clear understanding from the self. Bringing both poles together puts the world into perspective where you can truly make your own maps.

Nietzsche described a similar idea in his book, The Birth of Tragedy. He saw tensions between Greek Gods; Apollo, representing light, clarity, and form; and Dionysus, representing drunkenness and ecstasy. These two forces rest in almost all of society and in each of us. The Apollonian style is our idea of order and form in the world accepting rational thought and individuality. Basically the way we structure the world and make distinctions about everything. It’s the brilliance in each of us. The Dionysian style is the direct opposite. It represents our feelings, will, chaos, emotions, and enthusiasm. The urge inside of us is the passion that burns that can be seen as madness when fully realized. The world needs both of these to create order.

Edgar Allen Poe discussed being mad as possibly the loftiest intelligence as others saw shame in expressing such bi-polar passions about the world. Poe says about madness, "The question is not yet settled… whether much that is glorious – whether all that is profound – does not spring from disease of thought – from moods of mind exalted at the expense of the general intellect." This "Mad-Genius Controversy" has been around since before the enlightenment, whereas rationality became highly looked upon parallel to conformity and consistency. Don’t go mad ............go BrilliantlyMad.

For us, the meaning of life is…

the seemingly unobtainable holy grail of existence, the fountain of youth for our mind and soul. It is something that always seems just beyond the reach of our understanding. I would dare to challenge this paradigm by paralleling it to mathematics. Just like in fractal geometry, the infinitely complex mesh of life and the human psyche is governed by a simple equation that answers what we seek. It's always been hidden in plain sight, we've just covered it with trite superficial materialism, yet we always seem drawn back to it without even realizing it.

The Greeks and Latins did a much better job of describing something so important to us but I only have one word in English – love. Love is life and life is love. Everything we do that is endearing of the human spirit is always rooted in love and everything we abhor about ourselves is at odds with it. Dig deep within yourself and you will see that all the happiest moments in your life were tied to love in one of its forms. It is why so many people are so unhappy all the time – because until they live to love they will never love to live.

T and A (Tips and Advice)

Dear Kris and Rozz,

I just wanted to thank you for writing your book. I haven't finished it yet, but It's definitely the best on the subject I've seen. I would like suggest, however, that it might have served your readers better if you had been a little bit more responsible regarding those people you label as "anxious boys," as in "Anxious Boys Get Nothing." As someone who has suffered a lifetime of post-traumatic stress syndrome and severe, debilitating depression, I find your remarks reprehensible and sexist.

Anxious girls get bloody little too and what they do get is usually abusive. Furthermore, it appears that it would never occur to you that many anxious people get "anxious" only after years of being consistently rejected by one or both sexes or that their "anxiety" might have been caused (at least partially) by their having been brought up in a home wherein it was taught that persons who are not exclusively heterosexual should consider suicide as a "moral" option when prayer doesn't work or that it may have been influenced by the fact that they're poor, ill or simply considered unattractive (even when clean, well dressed and smiling).

I am such a person and though I know that I am in no position to demand love from anybody, I am still a human being and my need for love is real. I recently had to fire my psychiatrist for telling me that I should not concern myself that my wife no longer desired me; after all, said he, "Depressed people are hard to love."

Maybe I'll get lucky, get cancer and have my oncologist tell me that "people with cancer are hard to love." It would be equally as false and as odious. Anxious people get nothing because people like you define them as being worthy of nothing. I have loved anxious people and found no difficulty whatsoever. There are millions of us out there and we deserve better. I hope in the future you will remember that.

Dear David,

Thanks for your thoughtful praise of our book. I’d like to include your letter in future editions of The Handbook. I know that no one needs to tell you that we live in a difficult world -- as your letter clearly reflects, life can be very, very difficult. Right off, I have to tell you that I have lost many opportunities at success in relationships and business by appearing too anxious. One of the reasons I chose to share "Anxious Boys Get Nothing" with our readers is with the hope that repeating that phrase in a difficult situation can help men or women remember that they are stressed because they really don't want to fail, but it is that very stress that can cause them to fail.

One of the core purposes of the book is to encourage people to look at the bigger picture. Where we start out in life is not our choice, but what we do with our life is up to us. Chance and choice are involved in any situation. Depression is very real and nothing to jest at. Yet there are so many weird statistics that if taken as a whole can provide a light on a very difficult subject. One fact is that suicide rates are much higher in Japan and the U.S. than they are in developing countries. People who are really struggling to stay alive seem not to have time to question the validity of their own existence. Also, since medical science has developed so many drugs that treat depression, the incidence rate of depression has dramatically increased. Some people don't survive drastic trauma. You obviously did.

The most difficult part of your situation is that you and your psychiatrist are both right. But you know what? Depressed people and people with cancer are not the only people that are hard to love.

It's not just what you are given, it's much more what you do with it. At some point you either have to stop blaming your past, your parents and your genes, or you will spend too much of your life feeling miserable. Do what you can to take charge of your life and you'll tend to be a lot happier. Find the little moments to enjoy the journey. I can only tell you what works for me, and I don’t blame others, my life is my own responsibility.

Finally, regarding the idea that I'm sexist against my own gender, under that same A.B.G.N. section of The Handbook I do point out several times that being overly anxious is counter-productive to women too. The reason I don't say that anxious people get nothing is to emphasize the dramatic gender difference that exists in society in the United States. Girls that are anxious can generally get laid much easier than similarly attractive, similarly anxious guys. (But when they do, it doesn’t seem to make them any happier.) If it is sexist to correctly identify any differences in the experiences of the genders, then I am sexist. Is it racist to report that White people in the US tend to be wealthier than people in certain other racial demographics?

You do deserve better. But I can't make your life better. The only one who has a chance of doing that is you. Where are you in your life right now?

The fact that you are reading books and writing clear insightful response letters, shows that you are doing far more than many are doing to figure out how to be the best you can be. Now join my ranks as a practical optimist, and take the actions available you to fill up the vessel of your life as much as you can possibly fill it. Each of us can only do so much, but each of us can always do more than we have so far. It's about facing each day and not letting our own mistakes or life circumstances destroy us. Let’s burst through the bullshit and the clichés to find the real meaning in life. What are you going to do today? What am I going to do today? Let's get to it.

The Death of Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Panadol, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is only survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

If you still remember him pass this on. If not join the majority and do nothing.

Winter 2006 Horoscopes

Capricorn: There may me a lot of childlike figures around you who want so eagerly to please you. Don't worry, they will grow up to understand it’s not about who they please, it's about learning how to be independent and strong. If you understand this, it won't be hard to set a good example. Taurus: Balance is the key to all your issues. The things you enjoy must be done in moderation. Your emotions may have a tendency to throw you overboard. When you find a balance between your mind and body, your true desires will be easy to accomplish. There's no coming down from a high when it's a natural one.

Gemini: Leave the past in the past – that's where it belongs. It's time to look to the future. Start now in taking the steps to create the new you. Come out swinging as this New Year begins and keep your eyes open. You can create your own career - it's been done before.

Cancer: There comes a time when you have to admit defeat and move on. This year had many of those moments. If you can't face the truth then you didn't learn your lesson. Don't repeat the same mistakes this year. It always takes a stronger person to admit they were wrong. Try to make amends with the people you cut out of your life. Sometimes the truth does hurt.

Leo: You need a break from trying to fix everyone else's problems. You had so many plans this year yet somehow most of them slipped right by you. Take stock and revise your plan of attack for the New Year. It's okay to put yourself first.

Virgo: Breakdowns can be good. That's when you're left with the vulnerability of being human. You're not a machine working against mankind. Set a good example like you usually do. Show this world how easy it is to dust yourself off and start from scratch. Remember it's just like riding a bike.

Libra: Do you believe in God or some kind of higher power? There is a system of truth that can work for you. Your skepticism can make you very bitter. Don’t let invalidation get the best of you. There is a safe and warm place you can go when you learn to trust yourself. That is the first start to finding your personal Jesus, Buddha, Gandhi...whatever works for you.

Scorpio: It's amazing when you really decide to take charge and run things in your personal life as you see fit. Only then can you take on the task of saving the world. When the shit starts to hit the fan, just throw on your raincoat and make the best of it like you always do.
