Burners Project

Pictures taken by Kara Cooper

Burning Man is a festival event that takes place once a year in the desert of Nevada. It draws in free spirited individuals with a strong opposition to mainstream culture who are labeled as “burners”. As free as they are, there are still a few rules which burners must live by. These rules are: radical self-reliance, radical inclusion and radical self-expression. This cultural phenomena is also in Chicago. I aim to reveal the unforeseen cultural movement through my documentary. The events that "burners" attend in Chicago are eclectic and increasing in popularity. In this series, I've encompassed the performances of fire spinners, butoh performers, black light dancers and LED hoopers as well as the lifestyle behind their shows. "Burners" are constantly altering their image and dances to invent new ways of entertaining people. They are completely independent, self-made artists whom create their own events, design their own outfits and choreograph their own unique performances. All who attend express levity, eroticism, spirituality, and catharsis.

Special thanks to Petra for our opening - many were touched by it. To Joe and Kat for the astounding gymnastic-yoga display. Feature Poet Mitch Avellini and the 'Circle of Fire' which included ten other inspired poets, songwriters and performers. To Preston, Mona and Tazdeen for Karma Sutra, stirring our spirits and our bodies. Inspired Healers and Readers Treesha, Tracey and Juan, and Body Painter Sally. Photographer and Chief Decor Designer Sarah, Birthday Greeter Tracy Fox. Chanteuse and House DJ Carla Starla, AngeLynx Visionary John Sacelli, Producer-Videographer David, Yoga Now Hostess Amy, and all the beautiful souls who attend, without whom of course there would be no CHI KA GO. We did it again!

Love Bombs were brought during February's Chi! Ka! Go! Thanks to everyone who brought their treats, including flowers from Loli and those bombs by Kumar. Great melodies moved us on the dance floor by The Souled Out Project with Ryan and Doug, along with the closing set from Carla. Tracey meditated us through an All Love opening channel. Kiki D'uva gave an incredible performance with her dual personalities then passed it on to each of the poets who stepped up. Our healers, Jennifer and Neale held sacred space in the back rooms with private sessions as Josh assisted in musical vibrations. Anna Brown read our pathways along with John Sacelli on AngeLynx. Nicole set her artistation on display while Alicia painted beautifully on skin. Thanks to Sarah and all who helped us set and take down the set for the night. We look forward to seeing the pictures that Melisa Gin captured through the night and await next month when the March Monkey Madness touches down. Namaste

Big love and a whole lot of breath were the themes from this past CKG as we balanced into 2012. We thank everyone who realized this at Yoga Now! We were led by Sarah Lombardi to witness the patience of opening our eyes into each other through yoga . Live electronic music and drumming beats by DJ Taz and vocalizations by Carla Starla moved the rhythms through bliss on the dance floor. Ari Rudenko focused us into an organic Japanese dance performance by investigating the interface between the dreamscape, the void and the material human body. Our two featured poets, Sanji Heaven and Tony Denis, began the poetry circle with heart filled words and Bob Macko's sacred flute concluded the sharing circle through magical soundscapes. Healing hands and feet were embodied by Mimi Clayton’s flowing Reiki Massage, Phil Blaetz’s soaring Flai Massage, Shauna Aura’s Tarot Readings and John Sacelli's AngeLynx. For works of art, we were blessed with Shaman Jay and Kro birthing paint to paper. Digital captures of the evening were flashed by Scott Mason, David Ziemba, Sarah Lombardi and Craig Sadur. Much gratitude expanded to our greeters Tia Cooper, Andrea Sausen and Sally Sachs, everyone who helped decorate/un-decorate and all who were a YES and soared through this experience with us.
